Life should not be about money, and we have our whole lives to worry about it. But if we start early on to understand how it works, to learn how to find a balance between what we earn and what we spend, and to understand the concept of preparing for uncertainties and taking calculated risks, we have the right mindset to build a healthy relationship with money so that it never has to become a worry. When we discuss money matters we learn how to understand our own feelings, needs and wants, what is motivating us, and more importantly, we learn how to change our behaviors when they are not working for us.
Digital technologies and financial engineering have made financial products and services increasingly difficult to understand, yet easy to use (even for kids!). So when things go wrong, we are not even sure why.
We try to make financial concepts simple, relatable and easy to understand. And we add complexity to the extent that students are interested and engaged (and we always surprise ourselves to see how much young minds already can grasp!). But more important than covering the contents and concepts, our goal is to develop critical thinking and the ability to break down more complex problems into simpler terms and to make reasonable choices.
We are better at dealing with money when we know ourselves better. When we know our rights, our needs and what makes us tick. And as we understand what is important for other people as well, we find opportunities to help them with ingenious ideas.
Our methodology is all about empowering students to observe their own and others' behaviours and to unleash their creativity and develop their problem solving skills. Students are exposed to financial, economic and business concepts through practical activities with relevance to their individual realities, and are encouraged to make mistakes and learn from them in a safe environment.
Our team is being put together by Renata Lima. Renata is a lifelong learner and an entrepreneurship enthusiast. She has degrees in Law, Economics and Business, and has worked many years as a lawyer and as an investment banker.
After becoming a mother, Renata embraced the beauty of going small, and started advising and creating small businesses. She has been trained by and is a partner of the Aflatoun International network , and is currently coaching children and women in financial literacy and entrepreneurial thinking.
We are recruiting new members for the (L)earnMoney team - if you are passionate about empowering the next generation of global citizens and entrepreneurs, get in touch!
